Went for a eye-opener walk since the restraints have shut down again for take out only indefinitely. Where I live is a suburb of San Francisco that has grown from semi-small town when I first moved here almost 30 years ago to high end shopping.
When my kids were school age I’d drive through downtown all the time for pick ups of one kid across town to get the other one. Right before the afternoon of pick up and sports, I’d stop at the Peet’s to gear up with my latte and a few more moments to myself before kicking into high gear for the rest of the day.
I won’t say the newer plazas they’ve built up after they did Broadway Plaza have ever done well. There was a hardware store with a massive parking lot that is a whole new section (now old) of parking and shops. They really haven’t been able to keep tenants in there, and Walnut Creek powers that be still want to build. There’s that South Park episode commercial of Sodosopa…that’s where I live, in Kenny’s house 🙂 Really though, the lot next door to us had a few trailers that we later found out was a mini encampment. That was over 20 years ago.
The Main street area was restaurant central. A few years ago WC was one of the top cities to go to for restaurants, now this 🙁 I’m not sure if it will ever recover, these pictures are taken in one block of my walk today. Sunday afternoon, when business is usually booming and not a parking space in sight. I did notice (didn’t take pics) in front of Peet’s that’s now the only place open, that people were bringing their own folding chairs to sit on.
We can pretty much kiss small businesses goodbye soon to Peet’s and Starbucks, like that movie Idiocracy. If you haven’t seen that, put it on your list. I feel so bad for these restaurants!! When they first did outdoor dining, downtown was packed and it looked so pretty. Heartbreaking.
I’ve been super careful with COVID, don’t understand this part at all 🙁
Just another excuse to stay indoors, hide under the covers, and hope we don’t have a Civil War in the USA!! Keeping to my strict “no news” until the end of the day policy so I’m only bummed out before I watch Seinfeld reruns at night instead of FREAKING OUT all day, every day.
